Not a Bicycle Rider? No worries! Lone Star Ride Fighting AIDS offers many opportunities to participate in the Ride without riding a bicycle. We have 160+ all-volunteer Crew Positions and 50+ Volunteer Positions as well as Crew Leadership available. See the descriptions below for details on how you can join the Lone Star Ride family and help contribute to this great event.

CREW OPPORTUNITIES
The Crew is organized into 5 groups of teams based on these descriptions. A Crew Coach with extensive knowledge of the responsibilities of their Crew areas guides each team. Each Crew has a Crew Captain, who guides the individual Crew to accomplish their necessary tasks. All teams have some lifting involved, some more than others, but there is room for everyone on the Crew. Each parenthesis contains the approximate number of Crew Members for that team. Crew members must register for the Ride and generally must participate both days of the Ride.
CAMP CREWS (All of the following camp crews work together as a team.)
- DINING SERVICES (8 to 12) Crew and Crew Captain Positions open. Responsible for setting up ride-out area, assisting riders with readiness (fill camelbacks, etc), setting up the Ride City (along with Gear/Tent crew), setting up/serving Friday pasta dinner, setting up/serving Saturday lunch and dinner, cleaning up the City after dinner, assisting riders with Sunday morning ride-out readiness, set up/serving Sunday lunch, assisting with clean up/tear down of the City after closing ceremonies. Must have the ability to lift 15-25 lbs.
- GEAR & TENT (6 to 8) Crew Positions open. Responsible for loading, transporting and unloading event gear and assisting with the set up of the Ride City. Also responsible for loading/trans-loading of Pit Delivery/Pit Pickup Trucks. This crew works in conjunction with the Dining Services crew. Must have the ability to lift 30-60 lbs.
- TRAFFIC & BIKE PARKING (6 to 8) Crew and Crew Captain Positions open. Responsible for the safe traffic flow at opening ceremonies and ride out, Saturday ride in, Sunday morning ride out, and Sunday afternoon ride in / closing ceremonies. Also responsible for bike parking areas at opening ceremonies, camp night and closing ceremonies. Ensures that every rider has checked in at camp by keeping a tally each day for ride-in. Requires prolonged periods of standing. Must have ability to lift 15-20 lbs.
PIT CREWS
- PIT STOP COORDINATOR (3) Crew Positions open. Working as a team or individually, the Pit Coordinators are responsible for assisting the Pit Crews Coach in coordinating the set up and operation of Pit Stops along the route. Will be the Pit Stop onsite assistance to Pit Stop Crews during setup of their Pit Stop, moving from Pit to Pit throughout the day. Also responsible for quick supply and equipment runs as needed and other Pit assistance as needed. Travels separately by personal vehicle and must have the ability to adhere to a tight schedule. Must be experienced in Pit Stop operations and have the ability to lift 10 to 30 lbs.
- PIT DELIVERY & PICKUP (6) Crew Positions open. Pit Stop Delivery is responsible for delivering ice, water, sports drink, food, and various other supplies and equipment to each Pit Stop before the Pit Stop opens. Pit Stop Pickup collects the equipment and unused supplies after each Pit Stop closes. Must have the ability to adhere to a tight schedule. Travels by 24 foot Box Truck and Ice Delivery vehicle. Must have the ability to lift 30 to 60 lbs.
- PIT STOP (6 to 8) Multiple Crews depending upon Route needs. Crew Positions open. Responsible for setting up and running each Pit Stop (rest area) along the route. Provides Riders and Crew with refreshments to include water, sports drink, fruit, snacks, etc. Usually the first Crews to leave in the morning and one of the last to arrive in camp. Travels by Passenger Vans. Must have the ability to lift 10 to 30 lbs.
- LUNCH PIT (8 to 10) Crew Closed. Responsible for setting up and serving lunch to both Riders and Crew at the approximate midway point of the days ride. In all other ways this is a Pit Stop, serving various refreshments in addition to lunch. Lunch is delivered to the Pit Stop. Must have the ability to lift 10 to 30 lbs.
ROUTE CREWS
- ROUTE MARKING (8 to 10) Crew and Crew Captain Positions open. Responsible for marking the bicycle route with spray paint/chalk and directional signs, and picking up the signs at the end of the day. The only advance Crew on the Ride must be available to begin work on Friday. Travel in Passenger Van or possible travel in individual vehicles. Must have the ability to lift 20 to 30 lbs.
- MOTO/ROUTE SAFETY (20) Crew Positions open. Responsible for patrolling the route to ensure the safety of both Riders and Crew. Stationed at busy or dangerous intersections to assist Riders. Travel primarily by personal motorcycle, with one or two small vehicles for support and assistance. Minimal lifting.
- PARTICIPANT TRANSPORTATION (2 to 4) Crew and Crew Captain Positions open.Responsible for transporting participants and their bicycles to Camp/Closing or Pit to Pit in the event Rider is unable to complete the route leg(s). Patrols the route, picking up participants and bicycles as needed and/or requested by Sweep Crew. Travels by Box Truck or Truck with Trailer with the ability to lift 30 to 60 pounds (Bike Transport), or by RV/Passenger Van (R&R Van) with minimal lifting.
- SWEEP (8 to 10 VEHICLES, 18 to 22 PERSONS) Crew Positions open. Responsible for patrolling the route, picking up Riders unable to continue riding and transporting them to the next Pit Stop or to Camp/Closing. Travel by personal vehicles able to accommodate a minimum of two Riders and their bicycles, with the vehicle having a bike rack of some type to carry the bicycle(s). Must have the ability to lift a bicycle and attach it to the rack.
- CABOOSE (2 VEHICLES, 4 PERSONS) Crew Positions open. Responsible for following the last Rider into each Pit Stop, Camp and Closing to ensure no one gets left behind or lost. Travels by any form of personal vehicle. Minimal lifting.
- DEDICATED SWEEP (1 to 2 VEHICLES, 2 to 4 PERSONS) Crew Positions open. Responsible for following and supporting special needs Riders that move along the route at a much slower pace, typically on recliner (recumbent) or arm-pedeled (handcycle) bikes. Travels by personal truck (pickup). Must have the ability to lift and load/unload the bike into the truck bed and prepared to travel at a slow speed (5 mph or less).
- BIKE TECH (4 to 8) Crew Positions open. Responsible for assisting Riders with mechanical problems with their bicycle, in camp, at the pits, and along the route. Various bicycle shops supporting the ride generally provide bike Techs, supplemented by Crew Members with bike Tech knowledge and tools. Must have some training in repairing and adjusting equipment. Travels in individual vans provided by the bicycle shops.
MEDICAL CREWS
- MEDICAL (16) Crew Positions open. Responsible for providing medical services to participants at the Pit Stops and in Camp/Closing. Crewed by various licensed or certified medical professionals. Must provide proof of license or certification, and a current CPR card. This team is under the guidance of the Lone Star Ride Medical Director. Must have the ability to lift 10 to 30 lbs.
- MASSAGE/CHIRO (16) Crew Positions open. Responsible for providing massages and Chiropractic aid to Lone Star Ride participants at Pit Stops and in Camp. Crewed by certified/registered massage therapists and Chiropractors. Must provide proof of license or certification, and massage table. Travels by individual vehicles to allow leap frogging along the route as needed.
- CRISIS (1 to 2) Crew Positions open. Trained Crisis Counselors on duty during the event to handle individual personal trauma situations.
EVENT CREWS
- EVENT CEREMONIES (6 to 8) Crew Positions open. Working under the direction of the Event Ceremonies Committee Chair, this crew is responsible for assisting the Chair and Ride Director in the planning and execution of Event Ceremonies (Ride Out, Camp Show, and Closing ceremonies). Responsibilities include setting the stage and sound equipment for ceremonies. Also assists Camp Crews as needed and as available. Requires some physical labor. Must have the ability to lift 30 to 60 lbs.
- EVENT MANAGEMENT (10-12) Crew Positions open. Working under the direction of the Event Management Committee Co-Chairs, this crew is responsible for: planning, coordinating and implementing participant bag stuffing and participant check-in and informational signage posted at check-in and event overnight camp location. The Event Management Crew will staff information tables at certain pits and overnight camp location with point persons who are knowledgeable about all aspects of the ride and are able to answer participant questions in a helpful, friendly and efficient manner. The Event Management Crew is the central location for all permits and information necessary to the execution of the event. Additional responsibilities include: ensuring participant lists and participant information are collected in a timely manner and immediately available for quick reference as needed; ensuring all participants are aware of Crisis Management staff and Crisis Management role in the event; ensuring all necessary housekeeping announcements, safety speeches, etc. are made at appropriate points during the event; and ensuring that re-cycle and merchandise tables are adequately staffed and managed at all relevant events.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Lone Star Ride has several Volunteer Opportunities for those who are unable to spend the entire weekend with the Ride as Crew Members. These opportunities are generally one time efforts and do not require a Ride Registration Fee to be paid. CHEERING SUPPORT (20-30) Volunteer Positions Open. There will be several cheering stations on the route both September 25 and 26. Volunteers are needed to help cheer on Riders at these as yet undetermined locations and at ride-in at Closing Ceremonies. Details regarding location and time to be determined.

PARTICIPANT CHECK IN: (6 to 8) Volunteer Positions Open. Volunteers are needed to help check in riders and crew 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, September 23 at AIDS Outreach Center of Tarrant County, 801 West Cannon Street, Fort Worth, Texas 76104; 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, September 24 at Resource Center of Dallas, 2701 Reagan St., Dallas, 75219; and 6:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. Saturday, September 25 at the Ride Out location American Airlines Training and Conference Center, 4501 Highway 360 South, Fort Worth, TX 76155.

CAMP TEARDOWN AND CLEANUP: (8 to 10) Volunteer Positions Open. Volunteers are needed Sunday, September 26 at American Airlines Training and Conference Center, 4501 Highway 360 South, Fort Worth, TX 76155. Report time will be 4:00 p.m. prior to Closing Ceremonies and teardown and cleanup will begin at approximately 6:00 p.m. with completion by 8:30 ? 9:00 pm.
CREW LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

CREW COACH (6) 2010 Positions Filled. The Crew Coach manages and leads one of the five Crew areas: Communication, Camp, Event, Medical, Pit Stops, and Route, and actively serves on and participates in the Lone Star Ride Council. The Crew Coach coordinates closely with the Ride Event Manager, the other Crew Coaches, and the Crew Captains within their area of responsibility to direct the Crew in supporting all aspects of the Ride and the Riders. Must be available to attend and/or otherwise support a number of pre-ride-weekend Lone Star Ride events (training rides, fundraising events, social events, etc) and the Crew Retreat weekend. Must also hold sub crew meetings as necessary and ensure Crew in their area of responsibility is adequately trained to support the Ride. Must lead by example by raising a minimum of $100 in donations or providing/procuring $100 sponsorship for the Ride and encouraging/assisting Crew Members do the same.
CREW CAPTAIN (1 for each Crew) Crew Captain Positions Open - see Crew Descriptions above for open positions. The Crew Captain manages and leads a Crew (varying from 2 to 12 people) in a friendly, efficient and professional manner, with a lot of fun thrown in too! The goal of the Crew Captain is to lead their Crew into helping to provide the best Ride experience possible for the Riders through full knowledge and understanding the responsibilities of their crew, and motivating and directing the Crew to meet those responsibilities in an outstanding manner that provides topnotch Customer Service to the Riders. With assistance provided by the Crew Coaches and Event Manager, the Crew Captain is also responsible for recruiting Crew members for their Crew and ensuring that Crew members are trained to complete the responsibilities of the Crew. Crew Captains will participate in a Crew Captains Retreat weekend and periodic Crew Captain Meetings and various Crew events leading up to the Ride.
